Potholes

gov.uk/government/news/seven-million-more-potholes-to-be-filled-next-year-as-public-urged-to-report-roads-in-need-of-repair - Pothole criteria for resurfacing v repairing. Roger Geffen: these are set locally so will vary.
However there is a widely recognised guideline that a pothole needs to be 40mm deep to merit repair.
The national guidelines (Well Maintained Highway Infrastructure ciht.org.uk/ukrlg-home/code-of-practice), do not recognise key aspects of what affects cycle safety e.g.
(a) whether the pothole is in the c2m nearest the edge of the road (or near where there is regular parking);
(b) whether the pothole is aligned across the cyclists' path or along it (like a tramline);
(c) whether it is on a gradient;
(d) whether it is at a junction (where cyclists' attention will be on what's going on around them, rather than the road surface). - Roger Geffen: The Asphalt Industry Alliance says the average pothole costs £72 to repair - see asphaltuk.org/faqs.
However reactive repairs cost more than planned repairs, and costs are higher in London than elsewhere.
